PGI Visit to New Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu and Singapore

Missionary visit to New Delhi, India

The President General was In the Indian capital, New Delhi, from January 9 to 11. The Central Council of New Delhi is made up of 5 Area Councils and 45 Conferences. The agenda was prepared by the National President, Bro. Jude Mangalraj, with the support of the local President, Bro. Stanislaus. The President General met with Archbishop Mgr. Anil Couto, visited the Sacred Heart Cathedral, took part in a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Central Council and gave a talk to about 60 Vincentians of the metropolitan region.

 

Official Visit to Kathmandu, Nepal

The missionary visit of the President General to Kathmandu, capital of Nepal, took place from January 12-14. It was the first visit of a President General in this country. The SSVP was founded in 2010 and has 15 active Conferences, three in the capital and 12 in the interior. Bro. Arnold D’Souza is the National Coordinator of the SSVP (no National Council yet). The President’s agenda included a meeting with Vincentians at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish (80 people), an audience with Archbishop Mgr. Paul Simick, a working meeting with the national leadership and a visit to Our Lady of the Assumption Conference. Less than 1% of the Nepalese population is Catholic.

 

Institutional Visit to Kolkata, India

The second stop of his trip to India was in Kolkata, land of St. Mother Theresa, on January 15 and 16. The agenda in Calcutta, prepared by Bro. Ashish Biswas (president of the Central Council), included the celebration of the Holy Mass in Saint Anthony’s Parish by Archbishop Mgr. Thomas D’Souza; a talk to about 100 Vincentians of the metropolitan region of Kolkata; a visit to the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity’ headquarters, an entity founded by Mother Teresa; and a visit to an orphanage serving 80 children with special needs. There was also a visit to Catholic sites, especially to Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Holy Rosary’s Parish and the Church of Saint Thomas. Kolkata has 5 Area Councils and 30 Conferences.

 

President General visits Singapore

The visit of the President General took place between January 17 and 20. His agenda was prepared with great care by the National President, Sister Lucy Cher. Some highlights: audience with Cardinal Mgr. William Goh; home visits; meeting at the National Council; a presentation to Vincentians; a visit to special works and social projects, and to institutional partners. Renato Lima met with Bro. Michael Thio, 15th President General, and they had good moments together. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul was founded in Singapore in 1951. It has 30 active Conferences, 5 Area Councils, 800 members and render assistance to 3,000 people.
