Beloved Brothers and Sisters,
As we approach the 211th anniversary of the birth of Blessed Frederic Ozanam on April 23rd, let us reflect on his profound legacy as the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He was a holy visionary who, through his unwavering faith and compassion, adorned the destitute with the sanctified mantle of kindness.
Born in Milan, Italy on April 23rd, 1813, Blessed Frederic Ozanam exemplified deep faith and boundless empathy from a young age. At just 20 years old, he responded to a challenge from a fellow student to translate his Catholic beliefs into action by establishing the Conference of Charity, later known as the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
His conviction in the inherent worth of every individual propelled him to serve the impoverished of Paris diligently, inspiring others worldwide to follow suit in aiding the less fortunate.
Let us heed his timeless counsel: "Let's do without hesitation whatever lies in our hands. Recognizing each person as a unique creation of God, deserving unwavering respect, he emphasized that charity, akin to the Good Samaritan, tends to the wounds of the afflicted while justice strives to prevent their affliction.
In light of his wisdom, I urge all Vincentians to embark on innovative initiatives within their respective Conferences, Area councils, and Central Councils, thus fortifying our society. Your collaboration is pivotal in this endeavour.
As we commemorate this auspicious occasion, let us lift our prayers to God, beseeching HIS blessings.
“Oh God, who filled the hearts of Blessed Frederic Ozanam and his companions with a love of the poor and inspired them to found a society for the relief of the needs of the suffering, bless the work of Christian charity. If it is Your will that the church should honour Bl. Frederic as a saint, we ask You to show by miracles how pleasing he was in Your sight. Through Christ our Lord - Amen”
